Burnout: 4 concrete tips to avoid it

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: In a previous video we talked about the warning signs of burnout, but I didn't give a lot of information on all the ways you can take care of your energy throughout your professional career so that this enormous fatigue never falls on you. So to be simple and effective, I am going to share 4 concrete measures that will allow you to manage and build your energy throughout your career.

#1 To avoid burnout: take care of your body.

I'm going to start with the simplest one, the body.It's the simplest, but it may be the one you pay the least attention.Leaders, managers, leaders, employees who succeed over time, in maintaining a tremendous level of energy and commitment, are those who pay particular attention to several things about their body.First of all, Your sleep.

It is absolutely false that 4, 5 or 6 hours of sleep are enough over time to maintain your energy, your ability to concentrate, and your intellectual intelligence.

Numerous scientific studies and Arianna Huffington's “talk” in Ted Talks attest to it, A number of 7 to 8 hours of sleep is required over time to keep your IQ, emotional, and relationship quotient at the top. Beyond sleep, there are a few key principles that are much more than good ideas and are proven to also be an effective source of energy: Do at least 30 minutes of sport three times per week.

The studies of Tal Ben Shahar from Harvard explain this very well to you, and are effective for anyone looking for methods to recharge their batteries.

Moreover, managers who perform over time, talents who have no energy problems, are also people who are very vigilant about the quality of their food.All of these are not details...

#2 To avoid burnout: take care of your emotions.

After the body, what is very important is to take care of your emotions.People who can get burned out are people who don't listen to their emotions. While emotions are the best indicators of your needs.Whether it's sadness, anger, joy or fear, each of these emotions gives you a very interesting indication of your unsatisfied need.Fear, for example, indicates your need to be reassured.Anger indicates a strong need to obtain redress, due to a real or imaginary feeling of having suffered damage... In short, I don't have time to give us a course on emotions here and what will be the subject of a coaching session next minute.But listen to your needs :How do I feel? What is my emotion? How do I feel? What do I need today to feel fully energized and what will I do today to meet my need? Instead of “balancing” my needs on others, ask yourself: “What am I going to do to meet my need? ”

#3 To avoid burnout: know what matters to you.

The third thing that will keep you energized over time is the almost “spiritual” aspect of your professional journey. Not spiritual in the religious sense, but spiritual in the sense of know your values : What is fundamentally important to you; Who are you in real life; What is your true “me”; Who are you at work; Who are you in personal life?

How are these values protected, put to the test every day and above all cared for? Do you act according to your values? What you say, the actions you take, the way you work with your collaborators is in line with your values ?

Be vigilant, not to do it every morning, but at least every 3 to 6 months and maybe once a year, and say to yourself: “Finally, what is most important to me in my personal life, in my professional life, in my friendship, in my love life, in my sports life and how do I take care of what I call My big pebbles ? ”

Put them in your jar first. These are the most important things that may prevent you from becoming what we call “drained” in English: losing your energy.

You all know the story of big pebbles and if not you can find it here. Once you have identified what is very important for you in life, also know that one of the keys to managing your energy is the fact of keep the “drive” on your agenda.

Who are the people who are doing just fine? These are the people who, every day, every week, look at their agenda, define periods that I call “RVMM”, the “Appointments with Myself”.

These people are not going through all the appointments that accumulate in their agenda without any control.

The key is, “What is the most important thing today? How do I put it on my agenda?

#4 To avoid burnout: control your negative thoughts.

Finally, this fourth point, which is very important: The power of your thoughts.The power of your negative thoughts that exhaust you and that can be called: “ruminations”, “ruminations”... On this subject, I warmly recommend the book by Christine Lewicki: “I stop complaining at work! ” or “I'm stopping complaining.”In fact, be careful and listen to your thoughts.Which ones ruminate, which ones whine? How do you focus on the solution rather than the problem on a daily basis? How do you become a co-creator of the solution? What is the problem? What solutions can I find? What can I suggest? Who can I go talk to about it? Pay attention to the power of your negative thoughts that can be Wanned and that can really impact your energy.

Then Also find people around you who give you energy, by their optimism, by their joy of life, by their creativity, by their kindness. It depends on what you need. Surround yourself at least, a few times a day, with these people who recharge your batteries.
